Hydrosalpinx: Fertility Issues, Natural Treatment and More – Dr Chanchal Sharma

 What is Hydrosalpinx?

Hydrosalpinx meaning can be taken out from the word itself. Hydro means water; whereas, salpinx means tube. So, Hydrosalpinx refers to ‘water in the (fallopian) tube. The fluid that seeps through the fallopian tube may get trapped in the tube and cause a blockage.

In other words, we can say Hydrosalpinx is a condition of a fallopian tube that is blocked with a watery fluid.

How does Hydrosalpinx affect fertility?

When an egg is released from an ovary, it starts its journey to the uterus through a fallopian tube. The fluid in the tube can put its journey to an end killing the possibility of pregnancy. Because of the fluid in the fallopian tube, it becomes very difficult for sperm to unite with an egg in the tube.

If only one tube has Hydrosalpinx, there is a possibility of pregnancy from the other tube. But if both tubes are affected by it, the possibility of pregnancy is very rare. This condition should not be left untreated as it may worsen over time.

What causes Hydrosalpinx?

Hydrosalpinx causes are still not clear very well. But it is said that the fallopian tube has glands that secrete a watery fluid. And this watery fluid may get trapped in the tube because of some abnormalities such as:

  • Scarred appendicitis
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids
  • Abdominal surgery
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

What are the Symptoms of Hydrosalpinx?

Many cases of Hydrosalpinx are asymptomatic. However, some cases can show a few symptoms out of which pelvic pain is experienced most commonly. Other common symptoms may include chronic pain in the lower abdomen, painful periods, infertility or vaginal discharge.

What are the ways to diagnose Hydrosalpinx?

If a woman is having unusual symptoms or not getting pregnant, the doctor suspecting fallopian tube blockage may recommend any of the following tests.

  • Ultrasound. The swelling of the fallopian tube may be detected by an ultrasound. If the swelling is large, it could point out to a severe Hydrosalpinx.
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG). In this imaging technique, some liquid is administered into the uterus and the flow is monitored by using x-ray imaging. If the flow of liquid is not going well in one or both tubes, it may signal a blockage.

Laparoscopy. A laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical method. The doctor inserts a laparoscope through a small incision in the abdomen. The laparoscope has a lighted camera at the end. Using a laparoscope, the doctor can see inside the pelvic cavity. The doctor can introduce a dye into the uterus and see its flow by the laparoscope.

What are the treatment options?

There are several Hydrosalpinx treatment options. But it is your doctor who will suggest you the best treatment as per your condition.

  • Removing the affected tube by surgery. The doctor may suggest laparoscopic salpingectomy. It is keyhole surgery. In this surgery, the tube in its entire length is removed. But this treatment may impact the blood supply to the ovary.
  • Repairing the blocked tube. Through laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon will open the fallopian tube and remove the fluid in it. Then, the tube is clipped to prevent any leakage in the uterus.

In-vitro fertilization. Eggs are taken out from the woman’s ovary. They are fertilized in a lab and then implanted into the uterus. IVF pregnancy can be an option with some other necessary treatment.

Risks that surgery may have
  • Adhesions
  • Damage to nerves
  • Blood clots
  • Difficulty in passing urine
  • Potential damage to other organs

The treatment options mentioned above have their risks too. So, you must be careful about choosing a treatment option.
