Endometriosis: queries including risk factor for ovarian cancer

Is there a connection between endometriosis and ovarian cancer?

The symptoms—such as pressure, pelvic pain and bloating—of endometriosis and ovarian cancer could be similar but they both are different conditions. But research shows that there may be a slightly higher risk of ovarian cancer in women with endometriosis.

Researchers found in a study that there was a 1.7 times increase of ovarian cancer in women with endometriosis as compared to the other women. However, the researchers are still struggling to find the accurate data on the connection between endometriosis and ovarian cancer.

The study also states that endometriosis could be associated, besides ovarian cancer, with the risk of other types of cancer including hematologic malignancies, breast cancer, and brain tumors.

What is endometriosis?

The endometrium is the internal wall of the uterus. When an egg is fertilized by sperm in the fallopian tube, it comes down to the uterus and sticks to the endometrium and starts growing. The endometrium plays an important role in the growth of the child.

Each month, the ovary releases an egg. And under the influence of estrogen including other hormones the endometrial tissues start to grow bigger and store blood as nutrition for the expected pregnancy. If pregnancy does not take place, the body sheds the endometrium including the egg.

When endometrial tissues build up outside the uterus, usually in or around the fallopian tubes and the ovaries, this condition is diagnosed as endometriosis. Endometriosis could be from mild to severe. It could also cause infertility due to the blockages in the ovaries and fallopian tubes.

What are the causes of endometriosis?

Endometriosis causes are still unknown. But some that are assumed are:

  • Post-surgery implantation—surgery requires cuts. And because of these cuts, endometrial cells may stick to the other areas of the reproductive structure including the ovaries and the fallopian tubes.
  • Immune system disorder—immune system plays a vital role in detecting and destroying the cells that are not good for the body. Because of the immune system disorder, the body may fail to recognize and destroy endometrial cells at the wrong locations.
  • Retrograde menstruation—what is retrograde menstruation? It is when endometrial blood goes back to the pelvic cavity instead of coming out of the vagina. This blood contains endometrial cells that could stick to the other areas.
  • Hormonal imbalance—if hormones aren’t working properly, this could create issues in the functions of the reproductive system. Several issues including endometriosis could also take place.
  • Tissue transportation—endometrial cells could also be transported to the fallopian tubes or the ovaries by tissue fluid or other vessels.
