Tuberculosis is much prevalent in our country and is a major cause of female infertility. We shall discuss here the role of Ayurveda in treating tubercular infection in the fallopian tube.


Genital tuberculosis in females is quiet common, especially in communities where extra-genital TB is common. It affects any body organ and has high chances of recurrence.

Tuberculosis is the most prevalent communicable disease, which has been declining in developed countries. However in our country TB is a major health problem with highest incidence. Genital tuberculosis is the cause of most of the cases of female infertility. Genital TB is usually appears as a secondary symptom of primary TB.

TB infection in the fallopian tube is commonly found in women between 20 to 40 years of age. It is commonly diagnosed when a woman complains of infertility. In majority of the cases of genital tuberculosis, fallopian tubes are the first source of infection. In 90% of the cases both the tubes are involved.


TUBERCULOSIS IN AYURVEDA

In Ayurveda tuberculosis is correlated with yakshma or rajyakshma that involves loss of essence of tissues and low immunity resulting in affecting any organs. There is loss of rasa, rakta, mamsa, meda and shukra dhatu, ultimately leading to ojakshaya (loss of immunity).

SYMPTOMS RELATED TO FALLOPIAN TUBE TUBERCULOSIS

Symptoms include weight loss, fatigue and fever. These symptoms are usually mild in nature and some of it are asymptomatic.

Primary or secondary infertility – it is the most common symptom.

Disturbance in menstrual cycle – menstrual irregularity is a common disorder.

Abdominal swelling, vaginal discharge etc – pelvic pain is reported by 25 to 50% of patients. The pain and swelling advances with the infection and is aggravated by exercise, sexual intercourse and menses.


AYURVEDIC APPROACH TOWARDS FALLOPIAN TUBE TUBERCULOSIS

We all know how dangerous tuberculosis is and if left untreated it leads to severe complications. Here we shall discuss how Ayurveda enhances the effect of modern medicines in a fight against tuberculosis. Antibiotic treatment is very much necessary but following Ayurveda can strikingly improve patient outcome.

Ayurvedic treatment for tuberculosis was common until modern anti-TB drugs became available. Modern medicine for TB is effective but is not affective once the body becomes resistant to it. According to the recent research ayurvedic treatment may prove to fight against it.

Rasayana compounds when used with anti- TB drugs are very effective. It reduces the symptoms of tuberculosis. Amalaki, guduchi, yashtimadhu, and pippali are some of the rasayana.

There is inflammation in the tubes when infected. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) measures the inflammation and also reflects the effectiveness of medicines. Ayurvedic medicines such as ashwagandha and chyawanprash decrease the ESR when used along with anti-TB medicines.
