What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is the growth of endometrial-like tissues outside the uterus. The endometrium—one of the three layers of the uterus—has tissues that break and bleed during menstruation. The endometrium has its role to play in the reproductive system. It prepares itself for the fertilized egg. But when it receives an egg that is not fertilized, it sheds itself along with the egg.

But when it receives a fertilized egg, it provides nutrients to the egg and removes waste. Endometrial-like tissues can grow outside the uterus and act the way real endometrial tissues do. They also break and bleed. And blood from them may not come out of the body and create inflammation, pain or infection.

The places where endometriosis can occur commonly:

  • The ovaries
  • In the space between the bladder and the uterus
  • In the space between the rectum and the uterus
  • In supporting ligaments of the uterus
  • The fallopian tubes
  • The layer of the pelvic cavity
  • The outer layer of the uterus

The places where endometriosis can occur rarely:

  • The intestines
  • The rectum
  • The vagina
  • The vulva
  • The bladder
  • The cervix
  • In scars in the abdomen area

What are the Types of Endometriosis?

There are said to be three main types of endometriosis, depending on the location.

  • Deeply infiltrating endometriosis. Lesions grow under the peritoneum, and could also be seen in the bowels or the bladder.
  • Endometrioma. The lesions are filled with fluid and appear as dark cysts. They are also called the chocolate cysts. They grow deep in the ovaries and do not respond well to medicine. They can also damage the ovaries.
  • Superficial peritoneal lesions. They are more common than the other two. They grow on the peritoneum. The peritoneum is a thin-layer line of the pelvic cavity.

Endometriosis Symptoms

The endometriosis symptoms are not the same for everyone. They differ from person to person. The most common symptom is pelvic pain. Other symptoms, depending on how mild or how serious the case is, may include:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain while passing stool (during periods)
  • Pain while passing urine (during periods)
  • Digestive problems such as nausea, diarrhea and constipation
  • Chronic pain in the lower abdomen
  • Spotting between periods
  • Painful sex
  • Infertility
  • Painful periods
  • Intestinal pain

Endometriosis Causes

The causes of endometriosis are unknown. Researchers do not know what causes endometriosis. But, there are a few assumptions. They are:

  • Retrograde menstruation. It is considered a strong possibility. In retrograde menstruation, blood flows back in the uterine cavity and is thought to transport endometrial cells to the other organs of the reproductive system.
  • Surgery.  The surgeon has to make a cut (cuts) during surgery. While making cuts, endometrial cells may stick to the other organs in the uterus.
  • Hormonal imbalance. Hormonal imbalance or the immune system disorder might also cause endometriosis.
  • Genes. Genes could also play a part in it. If your mother or sister has had endometriosis, it might enhance your risk of it.
  • Poor nutrition. The body needs proper nutrition for its functioning. Poor nutrition can disturb the functioning of the body.

Can Endometriosis Cause Infertility?

Endometriosis may cause infertility. In mild cases, a woman may successfully give birth to a child. But a severe case can create complications related to conception, growth and birth.

  • These tissues can even block the release of the eggs if they wrap around the ovaries.
  • They can block the fallopian tubes, making it difficult for the egg to reach the uterus and for the sperm to reach the egg in the tube.

Tests that can be done to diagnose endometriosis

  • Pelvic exam
  • Imaging tests
  • Laparoscopy
  • Biopsy
